It takes 3 things for something to be a modern classic.
1. It has to be popular enough to have A impact on the anime community
2. It has to be highly acclaimed and generally beloved
3. It has to be unique and memorable enough to possibly/likely stand the test of time
Exceptions: Cult classics are also included. These shows/movies do not have "1" which means they never got super popular. But there is a considerable amount of people who REALLY loves them. 2 examples that are included in the list are sonny boy and odd taxi.
