If you have time and are willing to delve deep into the Gundam universe, the series is better (so you can watch the infamous salt filler episode.) But for the most part the movies are perfectly acceptable for 0079; which is why I've used them here. They're paced appropriately and they get to the point by cutting a ton of the TV filler. The movies are also a good choice especially if you feel the older animation can be a turn off for you. And you can always return to watch the full 45 ep TV series at a later date (which is what I did.) This movie covers episodes 1-13 of the TV series.

I strongly suggest the movie over the OVA version. This show was a struggle bus and the story is not worth 7 hours for 60 minutes worth of useful background information in regards to sequel Zeta

Watch the TV series over the films as a first time watcher.
Viewing the movies over the TV series is a hard pass. The addition of new animation and scenes from 2005 spliced and edited between animation from the 80's is so completely jarring as a first time viewer. So much so, it felt schizophrenic and I only got about 30 minutes into it before I stopped it. So yeah Zeta TV series is an absolute must for first time viewing.
*Will update with battle tinelines at later date
