Desaturating or heavily tinting a game a single color for the sake of realism, usually to a sepia effect (hence the trope name), but sometimes blue or pure grey.

• The trope is played in a subtle way: the environments of the battlefields in GGO are all a drab brownish color. Contrast with the much more vibrant and bright colors of SAO and ALO. It's certainly an accurate reflection of the usual color schemes FPS games use in Real Life vs. RPGs.
• and its spinoff AGGO, the online game of Gun Gale Online is presented as this, taking place in a post-apocalyptic landscape largely consisting of abandoned cities, deserts, and forests. The rest of the series, which takes place offline and in other online games, averts this with bright and cheerful colors.

The wild dinosaurs seen in the Jurassic and Cretaceous period are colored dull browns and greys, which certainly make them stand out from the colorful main dinosaurs.

Minimalized: Her hairdoes at the start of the series correlate to the kanji used to represent the days of the week (and the logic behind it). Monday through Sunday (as this is how haruhi has them numbered), the Kanji are "Moon" "Fire" "Water" "Wood" "Metal" "Earth", and "Sun". Haruhi assigns them the colours yellow, red, blue, green, gold, brown, and white in that order. Everything bar the weekend days should be obvious due to the usual colourings for the elements. Now most people would probably make Sunday yellow and Monday white, but for those days, Haruhi follows a different logic. Sunday is white because it's the last day in her lineup (by being six out of six), as it's the only day off. Everything revolves around the Sun. It's the last in the lineup because Monday is the first day of school and work for the week. You could also see it as the light at the end of the tunnel, a day of freedom. Monday is assigned the number zero because it's a melancholy day by virtue of being the start of the working week and the furthest from the day off. It's given the colour yellow because it's an energising colour, as well as the colour that things tend to fade into with overexposure to the sun or age. One could almost call it a reset colour. One could also say that Monday is literally used to represent Haruhi: represented by yellow, the colour of her headband, which is a high-energy colour on a mundane and sleepy day. Tuesday is one presumably because it's the day when it actually feels like the week is really getting going, once one has woken up from the slow, dull Monday.
