The first season, and this is TOTALLY CANON and the PREQUEL (along with Saidai Tournament) to the 2018 Baki produced by Netflix. Do not skip this.
This adapts the Childhood Saga and the Underground Arena Saga. In the manga the former is after the latter, but watching it like this makes it a better experience.
This anime leaves out a small arc from the manga (the very first one actually), which is the Karate Tournament arc. To watch that you can watch Grappler Baki OVA of 1994.
Either you can watch the OVA first then the anime, or vice-versa. But what I suggest is that you should watch till episode 18 of the TV series first, then the OVA and finally finish the season. The OVA is the Karate Tournament + ep 18 of TV series.
