For me, the main example is Platinum End by Obata and Ohba. Death Note was the series that got me into anime and manga in the first place, I loved it, I was even obsessed with. So I read Bakuman and liked it too even though it was completely different. I even read and enjoyed Obata's work with another author All You Need is Kill. I jumped to read the first chapters of Platinum End when it released. But I immediately thought it was a weak rip off of Mirai Nikki and I didn't even like that series. No admiration for the duo was enough to keep me reading it.

Another minor examples would be Ansatsu Kyoushitsu and Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi from Matsui Yuusei. They didn't really disappoint me like PE did, but every new series is more lacking in my eyes compared to Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. I loved that series for its rough art and the kind of horror/gruesome approach. I did like Ansatsu Kyoushitsu, I even liked it a lot, but the cleaner art isn't as charming and my impression was that he was starting to conform to shounen stereotypes and toning himself down. Maybe an exaggeration, but that's how I felt while reading it. Nige Jouzu no Wakagimi didn't even catch my attention. I read the first chapters, but I didn't feel very motivated to keep reading. It isn't that those two are worse than MTNN, but they aren't what I wanted from him.

@Lucifrost The more I think about it, the more I think that I should have been disappointed at Bakuman, but I just wasn't. Maybe it was because I was new to anime/manga at the time, but I just separated it from Death Note and enjoyed the romanticized view of the backstage. (And I will always appreciate the validation it gave me of my opinion on how Death Note should have ended).

I just think Ohba's strength lies in writing supernatural thrillers, and his weakness is writing characters. Yeah...

Ema Toyama - Watashi ni XX Shinsai

I've followed the mangaka since debut and consistently liked her works - just cute romance with art I really liked. Her 3rd one (Koko ni Iro yo!) was my favorite, and then her 4th manga in the same magazine (Nakayoshi, manga for younger girls) is Watashi ni XX Shinasai that really changed the tone into something more spicy and I didn't like it.

X by CLAMP. It was so shallow and pointless that I was hoping once the OVA actually came out it would make up for the manga, sadly that was not the case. I think I might have actually been worse.

Nobuhiro Watsuki, there was a mangaka section in Busou Renkin that he said he didn't know how to draw action scenes. I was like, YOU HAVE BEEN DOING IT FOR 10 YEARS NOW, GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER. (Now it is 30 years, but I never touched anything he made after that.) But I still hope the animators fix him with filler.

Hiroyuki Takei, first Shaman King run and his one shots were so much better than the Shaman King Final arc. Thankfully Naruto and Bleach picked up the Vs God after a training involving death and power ups concept that he failed to deliver.

Oshi no ko, not a fan of aka but I liked kaguya sama, so I was expecting Onk to be same given how much praise it gets.

It happens enough if you read multiple works of a single creator where it's bound that there'll be misses, but my prominent examples would be not liking "Nausicaa" as much as I thought I would given how much of a fan I am of Hayao Miyazaki's films. Also, I don't worship the ground Araki walks on like some Jojo fans, but I do like the series and am in the minority of not thinking "Steel Ball Run" is the best thing ever. "Jojolion" also fell flat for me, but that one hurt more because I started it thinking I was really going to like it.
