LGBTQ+ manga and info on them
MangaSpoiler
πΉQueer person here, with the intention of creating a list of manga on the topic, including about the manga in general as a piece of media and art, how it handled the characters being LGBTQ+, how much does it lean on the most overused or distasteful tropes.
πΉI basically just want to make it a bit easier to find them and know what kind of quality to expect.
πΉDisclaimers/Notices:
β³ I actually need to reread some of those since I've read them a long time ago, but in those I'll be leaving a note on the description so it's known.
π³οΈβπ And also I'm just one person, of course different LGBTQ+ people will disagree with somethings I say here.
Feel free to respectfully correct me via message.
For characters not explicitly labeled on the source material, I either left it vague or used the closest label I know of when talking about it.
β οΈ Some works have some triggering topics, but, as a general warning, a big chunk of those deal with some kind of bigotry and the main characters having to deal with it.
πΉ More heavily problematic titles, will be placed more towards the end of the list so it's easier to avoid.

A great work of art
The best manga I've ever seen about a trans man. The ending seemed a bit rushed, but not a bad work, the whole manga is great, there's no boring moment, very packed with feelings.
It's about a group of dudes who want to create a clothing brand. It's about art, feelings, dealing with others expectations on you, coming of age, choosing a path in life, coming out to your family and other stuff. I really like the artistic direction of this manga.
π³οΈβπ One of the main characters is a young trans man and there's one other adult queer character.

The best of it's kind
π³οΈβπMultiple intersex characters, and I think pansexual character.
This is the type of manga who takes time, but is very realistic so the pacing doesn't seem weird and there's actual real conflicts so it didn't feel like it took long for stuff to happen even tho it's a long manga.
The author clearly did their research. The manga is kinda educative even, not the educational boring type, just that it's straight forward enough that you actually learn with it.
The ending is a bit too open, and it seems like it's on purpose.
It's also the type of media that depicts real life struggles that many folks go through.
β οΈ Fair warning: contains depiction of Abuse (including sexual abuse), Manipulative toxic people (including parents), Bigotry, Violence, Violence against children.

A good work
There's a couple of things I that could have been done better, but it's overall a very well rounded piece.
It's a very "sweet" manga about love and gender.
π³οΈβπ The main characters are a trans woman and a sapphic cis woman who's in love with her, they are both teenagers and childhood friends. There's also one supporting adult aromantic character.
β οΈ It's the hurt comfort type of thing so be sure you can handle the drama when going into it. Also fair warning: it deals with bullying.

Teenager lesbian romance story.
Pretty solid, the art is great, storytelling very nice, characters are respectful of each other (besides the normal friendly banter), slow burn with misunderstandings at the start, funny cute manga, the characters are very endearing, It's good if you can stand the slow pace.

Solid love focused manga.
It's kinda short/hushed, but that fits the manga. Good if you're a fan of romance and drama.
The main girls passion for Photography plays a big role on the story, and through the lens of a camera, she and other for girls fond their way through love.
The main girl being very into photography brings a lot to it, the artist did a really good job at story telling and it's a very visually nice manga as expected of something about photography.

Similar to luminous=blue vibes, it's short, doesn't bring a lot of deep self reflection like various other works on this list, but it's a compelling story!
Good if you like romance.
"Sweet" type of manga, kinda shoujoesque schoolgirl romance, but more well thought and executed than most, it's not superficial, treats characters respectfully, it's not full bliss and it doesn't have irrelevant things for the pure sake of drama.
At some point the storytelling gets a bit confusing, either that or it's just me being slow, nothing big, but worth mentioning.
Art is not phenomenal, but it's pretty and good enough for what it's going for, they put effort on the important scenes and there's nothing extremely bad.

It's not a prime work of art, but it's an interesting short read.
This one is an auto biography about the author figuring herself out.

Good if you can stomach it! It's currently on-going so rating may change.
It's, to sum up, an introspect turned into narrative about sex, attraction, gender and body.
At the start it seems like it would lead to something very distasteful, but as much as there's some problematics, it can really make one think about and reconsider things, pretty solid.
It's basically the author turning their feelings and experiences with gender and sexuality into characters. Before knowing that some things felt iffy, it it all made sense when I read the parts where the author explains it. Like, It's an story by itself, but also, idk it's just so well done on this part that, I don't really know how to properly explain since I have never seen something like that well done in manga form.
I used to write poems in a similar format, so for me seeing a similar idea in manga form is also highly interesting.
I greatly relate to the feelings of "wanting to go back to that place in childhood before gender" and some other things about it, and I feel like a lot of other trans and gender non conforming people may relate to it.
It's also very beautiful, the artist did very good on that and on the story telling, it's the type of story who pulls you in, for me it was like a mystery book thing at the start, you have those interesting characters that clearly have something going on, but still just hinted and it makes me want to know more, "why?", "how?" and "what happens next?".
I kinda wish the author toned down the sexual part a bit because I'd be lying if I said it totally didn't bother me, but I guess makes sense to be that way given what the author had in mind while creating this manga.
π³οΈβπ I feel like it would be a bit disrespectful of me to label this one, but at least 3 characters are queer (2 main and 1 background character)
β οΈ NSFW, deals with sex, one of the characters sometimes makes some very expressive expressions related to it, manipulation and also forcing oneself onto another character, LGBTQ+phobia and disrespect mostly from the classmates.
Also I'd like to highlight, it's not like a nice pure clean story, the characters are not "just good people", this is not alike to the rest on this list.
So really, be sure to have this in mind when deciding if you will read it.

Definitely not the best, but not the worst either. I don't really recommend it unless you're really looking for any ok trans rep.
π³οΈβπ The main cast include trans and gender non conforming people.
It's about a young nonbinary who struggles to fit in, a dude convinces them to work on their "girl-boy" caffee.
And there they again struggle because the dude got it all wrong and we'll, it's like, it gets better, but the pacing is really badly handled. The art is cute and the artist knows what they're doing on the visuals, but the writing is not the best.

Good if you like love stories about teenagers.
Your average manga about school girls romance. With the addition of a "superpower" I guess (like the title says "what if only I could see love", main character literally sees it [and by that I think only romantic and not platonic], lol)
I'd actually say this one is a bit above average since the art is nice, doesn't have any distasteful tropes, the way the characters act is mostly understandable.
It will now blow your mind, you'll probably not learn much from it, it's not an amazing work of art, but it's definitely good, it feels like the artist also have a good grasp on comic making and stuff.

Basically a fan of a character gets Isekaid into the world of that character. I don't recommend that much if you're in for the sapphic relationship part. As much as it's not the best LGBTQ+ representation, if you can stand the tropes it's a great manga.
The art is very good, the story is compelling, I do not like how they handled the main couple relationship that much.
Not the best representation. Very one sided, and also the girl practically bullies the other and the later is basically forcing herself into the former, specially at the start, as much as they use the masochist thing as an excuse, for me that just makes it worse, that's also bad SM representation, I vaguely remember it getting a bit better as it goes, not sure how it's going now, tsundere trope. The art is beautiful, and I like how they handle magic, I'd like to say more, but it wold be a spoiler.

Story wise, it's a poorly executed good idea.
I wish the main couple was more respectable with each other. I mean, of course no one is perfect, but that was way too much. It's also kinda problematic, I don't think they handled the emotional baggage of a character very well, some actions the character took because of it had me going "what were you trying to say with that author?" and them the characters kept on going like that was totally ok.
The art is very nice and they really know how to do expressions, author really knows what they were doing with visuals. That made it so I really felt the scene mood and every emotional scene had a pretty big effect on me.

It's not the best, but if you can deal with reading a lot of overused distasteful manga tropes it's interesting.
Definitely not queer content for queer people. And I don't think most people who had interest on this stack would like this one either.
It's about a girl who wants a "harem" of girls.
I really don't like that they're highschoolers, sexualizing highschoolers is not nice, also has the "overly obsessed with Yuri" lesbian character trope.
β οΈ A blatantly perv character and a lot of lewd scene.
π³οΈβπ Lots of Sapphic characters including main character. Somewhat close to decent polyam rep.
SPOILER, but I need to say, I don't really like some things about the ending, while I think it's neat the three girls ended up togheter with the main character, I don't think them still having "I'll do my best for you to choose me as your number one" attitude going forward will lead to any good, it would be less worse if the main character just straight up rejected all the girls, cause with the way it happened that they'll just get their feelings hurt even more in the future! Also the fact that the main character straight up lied about her intentions to one of the girls to not be seen as she really is is not good, she has a bit of self esteem problems cause of her likes and she's lying about big things like her plans in life to one of her partners, and still on that topic, the one who convinced her to do that did so with ulterior motives, manipulative possessive girl towards the MC, that's also not a good behaviour for a partner, this usually leads to toxic relationships.
